![]() ![]() ![]() So now, if you put 20 GB on the second Volume, then Volume 1 will report 25 GB used, 55 GB free, and Volume 1 will report 20 GB used and 55 GB free. But now, if you create a second Volume in that same container it will "share" that 75 GB with the first volume. If you put, let's say, 25GB of data on that Volume (drive) the the Container will have 75GB free, and the Volume will show 25 GB used, 75 G available. So, for example, if you have a Container that is 100 GB, then the first Volume will have access to 100 GB of space. But, unlike in the HFS+ system, APFS allows Volumes to be dynamic and to share the space in the Container. Then within that Container are what are known as "Volumes" and those are the things that mount to look like drives to you. Basically, if you format a drive for APFS, the system creates what is called a "Container" on the hardware, with the default being the Container is the entire drive. Erase at some level (there seem to be two or three now), with some specs (file system/whatever)?Ĭlick to expand.APFS is a very different animal when it comes to how it works. Maybe something to do in Disk Utility that is usually in the recovery options. I think in any case I need to be clear about how and when in the process to be sure everything currently on the new machine is gone. If not and that persists, then maybe I can manage to make a bootable installer, I tried that once and got a message that the server could not be reached, but maybe that was a transient problem. With luck I may be able to do an install via the Shift-Option-Command-R recovery. Both machines are on Internet, and I have a copy of the High Sierra installer I down loaded. ![]() I think what I want is to wipe what is on the new machine, install High Sierra on it so I have a clean machine, presumably like it would have been when new, and then try Migration again. ![]() I apparently did a poor job of trying to use Migration Assistant to copy over from my mid-2011 27" iMac running High Sierra. I have a 2017 27" iMac I bought recently (the "new" computer). I am afraid I am overthinking this or I'm just dense, but after a good bit of questions here in different threads with helpful answers I still am not sure how to proceed. ![]()
